Johanna Miller column: Merrill is on the path to no values at all - Wausau Daily Herald

For those unfamiliar with "Montana 1948," here is a partial list of its offensive content:? Rape, molestation and pedophilia of girls, especially Native girls, described in detail. Several board members claimed it would be "censorship" to remove the book. Then why don't we have "Hustler" magazines or the Kama Sutra in the curriculum. Censorship is not the issue, since adults are supposed to censor what children are exposed to. However, consensus does not establish moral right and wrong. However, I do not subjectively dislike "Montana 1948"; rather, I believe "Montana 1948" is objectively wrong for children. If morality is subjective, how can a teacher say that the rapes in "Montana 1948" are wrong. But we have laws protecting children from abuse, which schools are bound to uphold. Would the district suggest ignoring child protection laws. Is that why the district approves of a book wherein adults protect a child molester instead of the victim children. Do I have to watch an entire episode of "Jerry Springer" to know it's trashy. Do people really think children should watch inappropriate cartoons. He repeatedly interrupted several parents who were trying to speak and referred to himself as "we" while sitting among the school board members. The worst hypocrisy was being told I could move my values to another district or to homeschool. Even the book's author, Larry Watson, writes how perversion can be arousing. On top of this, the adolescent brain is not developed enough to consistently connect action to consequence, which is why teens are notorious for getting into trouble. Yet the district is determined to overwhelm children with images of rape and sexual deviancy before they are mature enough to vote.
