Drunken sex toy burglar jailed
Fraudster loses bid to have home sentence cut A Nelson man who stole Sex Toys from an adult shop did it as a drunken skylark, not to take the items for his own use, a court has heard. Greg Michael Gibbons, 21, was sentenced to six months jail on charges of burglary, theft, wilful damage and breaching his community work when he appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday. Maguire smashed the window and climbed into the shop, while Gibbons stood outside and reached in the window to get stock on display. He cut his forearm on the glass leaving blood at the scene. The pair left taking a number of items from the shop, including imitation penises. In a separate incident Gibbons went to a party at a Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology student's flat and stole a $4000 mountain bike as he left. He told police he had taken the bike, but was unable to find it when he went back to get it. Judge Russell said Gibbons had a history of alcohol abuse and had showed contempt for the court system by breaching his bail conditions. He said the bike theft had impacted on the owner's studies as the student was only 18 and the loss of the bike affected her progression to the next stage of her course. The owner of the Sex shop said he had been significantly inconvenienced by the cost of cleaning up after the burglary, and had to pay to have the shop secured. The judge sentenced Gibbons to six months jail and ruled out the possibility of home detention. Gibbon's lawyer Craig Stevenson said the theft had caused some embarrassment to his client, but it was an act of drunken skylarking and Gibbons had not taken the items for his own use.
